The adapter converts a DisplayPort to a VGA port and connects i.e. a MacBook with a beamer.

The IB-AC515a has an active chipset, which is responsible for the precision of the transmission from DP 1.2 to the VGA interface. Mirroring or expending modes for the screens are both supported. - DisplayPort
The DisplayPort can do a bit more, as the name says. It does not only transmit video signals, but audio as well. In combination with VGA, only video is transmitted of course, since VGA is unable to transmit any audio signals. - VGA
Discarding older screens is not always a necessary option. Some even support Ultra HD. If so, this adapter exhausts the maximal capacity of VGA. It furthermore supports UXGA and reaches a resolution of up to 1920x1200p@60 Hz.
